about

The story of this charming duo is one the rarest musical tales that I have ever come across. And it is all the lovelier to me, since I am participating a tiny little bit. At least in the name of the project.
Herr Wade was a friend of my parents, back in the sixties, in my hometown of Lahausen. At least I thought he was. Without ever having left a particularly deep impression, he obviously was a constant special guest in my subconsciousness. He would turn up in my dreams time and again. Herr Wade. I am picturing him in a classic German summer outfit, worn by gentlemen in their prime in Germany circa 1967: Shorts which were very short at the time, bright ankle socks, a pale blue polo-shirt. About six feet tall, slight beginning of a paunch, hair almost gone. An impressive man in his late forties, with dry natural wit and a pleasant, raspy and nasal voice. The more often I noticed that Herr Wade was taking on a guest role in one of my dreams, in which by the way he was wearing the above described summer outfit no matter what the temperature and weather conditions, the more certain I was that he never really existed and that the man with an almost fully bald head was just a product of my fantasy. Strangely enough, only ever at night in dreams and weirdly always in very short trousers.
When I could take no more, I asked my big sister: ‘‘Listen, I keep on dreaming about a fictitious friend of our father’s, bless him. A Herr Wade. Funny, right? He never really existed!“ The answer of my sister was: ‘‘But he did!“ The extent of my upset you can picture yourself.
My by now truly very good friend Sebastian, I met through our joint passion for pop music. We do not share the same taste to 100 per cent, but maybe 91 per cent. And we work astonishingly similar with regards to the hunger, curiosity and fervour with which we search for brilliant music. Many years ago, Sebastian became a regular listener of my radio show „Zeiglers wunderbare Welt des Pop“ (formerly on Bremen 4, for many years now at home on Bremen 2). We wrote to each other, met up (much too infrequently) and I am his big, also music-loving, brother, so to speak, he once wrote. I liked it. And the rest is history. But that is only really starting here.
Jørn Åleskjær and I never met. Yet I have been in love with his music for many years and not even that platonically. His band The Loch Ness Mouse has become a key ingredient of my show’s playlists. And also this story could end right here but it does not, which is wonderful.
My dreams took a turn for a bizarre escalation in around 2019. I dreamed of a record that I was immediately in love with. Summer pop, light as a feather, quite a few with German lyrics, apparently effortless arrangements and melodies that were so surreally and timelessly beautiful, they seemed out of this world. The band behind the music was called „Herr Wade“.
On waking up, I tried to contain my enthusiasm about what I heard in my dream. Not least due to the name of this strange dream pop band, it took only a few seconds to realise: It was just a dream. This album did not exist. Depressing, since directly after waking up, I could have recalled and sung several choruses of the album, could have described instrumentation, sound and atmosphere of the songs in detail. Already by midday, everything was gone. Not a sound was left. Just the story about a beautiful and daft dream, in which again obtrusive Herr Wade was loitering
I was pre-occupied by this dream. It annoyed me. It frustrated me. An album that could have ranked among my alltime favourite albums, had simply vanished. Somewhere in my brain lobes, not lost, yet untraceable. I told the story in my radio show.
Then I forgot it.
Years later, Easter this year, Sebastian wrote me the following message: ‘‘Dear friend, had you not been dreaming of a band called Herr Wade? Do you know what? IT EXISTS! Check your emails...Happy Easter to you and yours, all the best and till soon, Sebastian. “ And thus it continued all of a sudden. With that record, with the music and old friend of my parents. This album has a lot of strangeness, sun and mystery. Even though it has become a truly, and in the best sense of the word, innocent, glittery sunshine pop record. The alliance of Sebastian and Jørn, two people from (to me) totally different favourite musical worlds, topped it all with a metaphysical touch. I will hardly have to mention that the music sounds almost like in my dream. A match made in heaven. I love it.
